Beetroot Detroit

Beta vulgaris

An old favourite which takes some beating, served cold in salad or hot with a white sauce. Easily grown, versatile, deep crimson in colour.

When to plant: Early Spring through to early Autumn

Location:

How to grow: Prefers a well-cultivated soil. Sow thinly and cover lightly with 12mm of fine soil, gently press. Prefers a well-cultivated soil. Space 30cm between rows. Thin out to 10cm apart when plants are at 2-4 leaf stage. Water regularly. From crop continuirty, sow at intervals of 4-6 weeks. Apply liquid fertiliser fortnightly. Suitable for deep freezing.

Harvest: 10 weeks

Cabbage Sugarloaf

Brassica oleracea var. capitata

Sugarloaf is a popular and highly recommended choice, producing conical heads with superb flavour and weighing up to 3 kgs. Can be served cooked or used as a salad vegetable

When to plant: Early Spring to early Autumn

Location: Prefers rich, well-prepared soil.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep in punnets, seed boxes or direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. Transplant 45-60cm apart to final growing position when seedlings are large enough to handle. Seedlings usually appear in 6 to 10 days.

Harvest: 8-14 weeks when the heads are firm and small.

Carrot Baby

Daucus carota

Delicious, sweet and packed with flavour. An excellent baby or finger carrot, with smooth cylindrical roots.

When to plant: Early Spring to Autumn

Location: Prefers an open, airy situation with light, fertile soil, not recently manured.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. Thin out to 25mm (1”) apart. For continuity, sow every 2 weeks. Seedlings usually appear in 10 to 21 days.

Harvest: 10-12 weeks. Suitable for freezing

Celery Crisp and Tender

Apium graveolens

A self-blanching type with delicious sweet flavour. Compact plants, the sticks are crisp and stringless requiring little attention. Good disease resistance

When to plant: Spring to Autumn

Location: Celery likes a rich, moisture retentive soil and a sunny position.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep in punnets, seed boxes or direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant in final growing position in blocks 25cm apart . Seedlings usually appear in 14 to 21 days.

Care: Keep well watered and fed to aid quick growth. Remove any side shoots forming at the base of the plant.

Harvest: 12-14 weeks. Cut blanched celery plant at ground level.

Lettuce Red and Green Salad Bowl

Lactuca sativa

This mixture will brighten up all your Summer salads with both red and green leaves. A crisp, tender, ‘non-hearting’ variety. The leaves can be picked a few at a time whenever they are required. Crops throughout Summer even in hot, dry weather and hardly ever bolts. Lettuces prefer a sunny position and fairly rich soil. The combination of red and green plants make an attractive and useful edging to the vegetable plot or even the flower garden. The packets contain equal quantities of each colour.

When to plant: Spring to Autumn (avoid the hottest months).

How to grow: Sow at two-weekly intervals for a continuous supply. Sow thinly 5mm (quarter-inch) deep in rows 25-30cm (10-12in) apart. Thin out to 20cm (8in) apart and keep well-watered. Provide occasional boosts with liquid fertiliser.

Harvest: 8-10 weeks.

Pak Choi

Brassica rapa var. chinensis

A delicious Chinese vegetable which can be used as a substitute for spinach. The young leaves and stems are excellent chopped or diced in salads, while older leaves are best stir-fried or braised.

When to plant: Spring to Autumn

Location: Prefers well-drained soil and a warm sunny situation

How to grow: Sow just below the soil surface in rows direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. Thin out to strongest seedlings. Space 40cm between rows. For continuity, sow every 2 weeks. Seedlings usually appear in 6 to 10 days.

Care: Keep well watered

Harvest: 6-8 weeks

Parsnip Hollow Crown

Pastinaca sativa

A popular variety combining exhibition quality with fine flavour. The tapered roots are conical, long, white and very uniform.

When to plant: All year except Winter

Location: Prefers an open sunny situation and friable,well-drained soil.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. Sow thickly as germination can be irregular. Thin out gradually to 25cm apart. For continuity, sow every 2 weeks. Seedlings usually appear in 21 to 28 days. Space rows 45cm apart.

Harvest: 18-20 weeks. Roots should be pulled while young and tender

Radish Cherry Belle

Raphanus sativus

Cherry Belle is an early cropping, highly popular globe-shaped variety. Scarlet-skinned with a crisp texture and mild flavour. Excellent!

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers a rich, well-drained soil and sunny location.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 3-5cm apart. For continuity, sow every 2 weeks. Seedlings usually appear in 5 to 8 days. Space rows 25cm apart.

Harvest: 4-6 weeks.

Rocket

Eruca sativa

A unique and popular herb. It produces leaves with an interesting and peppery flavour. Ideal in salads.

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers a well-drained soil and a sunny situation.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 30-40cm apart. For continuity, sow every 2 weeks. Seedlings usually appear in 6 to 10 days. Space rows 30cm apart.

Care: Prepare soil with a complete fertiliser prior to sowing. Keep well watered. Also apply liquid fertiliser weekly during the growing period.

Harvest: 4-5 weeks.

Silverbeet Fordhook

Beta vulgaris var. cicla

Tremendously popular in Europe as well as Australia! This tasty, versatile and easily grown vegetable will provide a continuous crop. Cook the stalks and eat as celery - the rich leaves as spinach.

When to plant: Early Spring through to early Autumn.

How to grow: Drop a few seeds every 40cm (16in) in rows 12mm (half-inch) deep and 30cm (1ft) apart. Thin out to one plant every 40cm (16in). Keep well watered. Seedlings emerge in 12 to 14 days.

Harvest: 8-12 weeks

Snow Peas

Pisum sativum var. saccharatum

A delicious, sweet tasting pea that can be cooked and eaten whole. Producing large crops of light green pods, Snow Peas are a must! Height 1.1m (3.5ft).

When to plant: Autumn through to Spring

Location: Well-prepared, rich soil and sunny situation.

How to grow: Sow seeds 2cm deep and 5cm apart in flat trenches, 15cm wide. Fill trenches with soil and gently firm down. Space rows 45cm apart. Seedlings emerge in 7 to 10 days.

Care: Support plants with sticks to aid growth. During early stage of growth protect crop from birds. Keep well-watered. Suitable for deep freezing.

Harvest: 14 weeks. For best flavour cook immediately after picking.

Spring Onion All Year

Allium cepa

The salad onion everyone loves to grow and to eat. Quick growing, tasty and full of flavour. Young tender tops can be used like chives.excellent quality, fine flavoured bean that continues to crop over a long period. Particularly suited to later plantings as this is a good hot weather variety.

When to plant: All Year

How to grow: Dig small trenches 10cm wide and 5cm deep and place fertiliser along the sides of the trench. Refill trench and sow seed 6mm deep in the centre. Keep well watered and weed free, particularly in hot weather. Thinning is not necessary.

Harvest: 8-10 weeks.
