Seed Descriptions

Alyssum Carpet of Snow

Lobularia maritima

An abundance of tiny, white flowers make this adaptable annual an ideal complement to other garden colours, when used in rockeries, window boxes or as edging. Annual. Height 7.5cm (3in).

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers a sunny or partially shaded situation.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed. Keep moist. Keep moist until seedlings appear. Thin to 7-10cm between plants. Seedlings usually appear in 12 to 16 days.

Care: Regularly feed with a liquid fertiliser to encourange a long flowering season.

Flowers: 8-10 weeks.

Carnation Dwarf Fragrant Mixed

Dianthus caryophyllus

Double flowers with a rich range of colours and of course a delightful scent. Ideal for bedding and the border. Annual. Height 25cm (10in).

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers a sunny situation.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed after danger of frost has passed or in punnets or seed boxes. Keep moist until seedlings appear. When plants are large enough to handle thin to 20-30cm between plants. Seedlings usually appear in 10 to 14 days.

Care: Carnation like good drainage

Cottage Garden Mixture

Matthiola incana, Papaver rhoeas, Ageratum houstonianum, Centaurea cyanus, Cosmos bipinnatus, Gallardia grandiflora, Linaria maroccana, Nigella damascena, Zinnia elegans

A lovely blend of such old favourites as Stocks, Zinnias, Gaillardia, Poppies, Cornflowers and Cosmos. Full of colour and sweet scent. Annuals. Height: between 30-90cm (12-36in).

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers well-drained soil and sun.

How to grow: Scatter seeds thinly or sow in rows. Cover lightly with a seed raising mix, firm down and keep moist. When plants are large enough to handle thin as necessary. Seedlings usually appear in 14 to 21 days.

Care: Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails. Keep well-watered and mulch where possible to preserve moisture and deter weeds.

Flowers: 8-10 weeks.

Dianthus Spring Beauty Mixed

Dianthus plumaris

The traditional cottage garden pink with double and semi-double blooms in a wide range of colours. Perennial. Height 40cm (16in).

When to plant: All year

Location: Dianthus thrive in a sunny situation.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed after danger of frost has passed or in punnets or seed boxes. Keep moist until seedlings appear. When plants are large enough to handle thin to 2-3cm between plants. Allow 30cm between adult plants. Seedlings usually appear in 12 to 16 days.

Care: Keep well-watered at all times. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering

Gypsophila Convent Garden

Gypsophila elegans

World famous, pure white strain producing masses of flowers perfect for cutting. Annual. Height 45cm (18in).

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers a sunny location

How to grow: Sow sparingly into final location. Barely cover the seed as they need light to germinate. Sow a few seeds in groups 25cm apart and the same distance should be left between rows. Keep moist until seedlings appear. Thinning is not usually necessary as plants flower well in clumps. Seedlings usually appear in 14 to 21 days.

Care: Prepare soil well before sowing, using a complete fertiliser. Sow in intervals for succession

Impatiens Bizzie Lizzie F2

Impatiens walleriana

A good quality, very free-flowering mixture in a profusion of colours. Ideal in hanging baskets, tubs or as a bedding plant. Perennial. Height 20-25cm (8-10in).

When to plant: Spring and Autumn

Location: Prefers a shady, damp situation

How to grow: Sow direct in to a garden bed after danger of frost has passed or in punnets or seed boxes. Press seeds gently into the soil surface and mist to keep evenly moist until seedlings appear. Location: Prefers well-drained soil with sun and shelter.

Care: Keep well watered. Mulch to retain moisture and cool roots during hot periods. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly. Remove dead heads to prolong flowering.

An easy way tot fill garden spaces. Blended from approximately 12 varieties including many popular annuals. Will cover approximately 2 square metres. Height 30-90cm.

When to plant: All year

Location: Prefers well-drained soil and sun.

How to grow: Sow 5mm deep direct in to a garden bed, in rows or clumps. Keep moist. Keep moist until seedlings appear. Thin out to 30cm between plants. Seedlings usually appear in 21 to 28 days.

Care: Keep well-watered. For a second show of blooms cut back after first flowering. To dry, pick as stems are opening and hang upside down in a cool, dry room.

Flowers: 18-20 weeks.

Swan River Daisy Mixed

Brachycome iberidifolia

Star-like flowers in shades of blue, purple and white with a sweet, light scent appear above mounds of feathery foliage. Ideal for containers and bedding. Very hardy. Annual. Height 30cm (12in).
